Subj: A-6B Aircraft; Model designation of (U)

Purpose. The purpose of this Notice is to establish the Model designation for the A-6B aircraft.

2. Description. The A-6B (Intruder) is a dual-place, twin turbo-jet, attack aircraft, capable of performing high-subsonic air attack missions against land or sea targets from carrier or land bases. The armament system includes five external store stations, each capable of carrying 3600 pounds. The crew will consist of one pilot and one bombardier/navigator.

3. Nomenclature. The subject designation is applicable to the FY 66 supplemental buy of 54 aircraft, heretofore known variously as the A-6 (MOD) and/or the A-6C.

4. Utilization. Three, 12-plane, A-6B squadrons will be introduced into the fleet as a replacement for three VAL (A-4E/C) squadrons. A letter of planned introduction will be issued in the near future by separate correspondence.

5. Cancellation. This Notice is cancelled for record purposes on 31 October 1966.
