The 74-Z Military Speeder Bike is preferred by Scout Troopers due to both speed and reliability. This speeder can travel for thousands of kilometres without any significant maintenance, allowing the scouts operate unsupported for weeks at a time. Also they are trained for urban patrol duty. The speed and manoeuvrability of these speeders make them a great asset in searches for entrenched Rebel urban assault troops. The 74-Z is more manoeuvrable than ground and airspeeders, as well their speed allows them to travel through terrain that would hinder those vehicles. These speeder bikes were normally used for scouting and exploration, as well as spying on Rebel bases before a ground assault. The Scout Troopers on these bikes are ordered to avoid combat, so they can report any findings to base command.
The 74-Z have two outriggers with four forward steering vanes. The manoeuvring controls are located in the hand grips, while the altitude control is built into the foot pedals, however speed is usually is controlled through the foot pedals. The communication, sensor and weaponry control panel is located in front of the saddle, while beneath the saddle is a small cargo compartment. The control configuration may be reset through the control panel. Some scouts prefer to run the accelerator controls through the hand grips. In the forward undercarriage section of the bike, houses the manoeuvring control units which are linked to the directional vanes and the single blaster cannon. The armour of this speeder bike is only able to withstand small arms fire. The rear section is taken up entirely by the power cell and repulsorlift engine.
The Aratech is the most
popular Speeder Bike currently in Imperial service. Imperial Scout Troopers
normally worked in units referred to as Lances. Each Lance has four Scout
Troopers led by a Sergeant Commander. A Lance would be split up into two
parts for field operations. These scouts could explore and survey far more
territory per man than could those using almost any type of other vehicle,
and these scouts operated with unusual autonomy.
