The IPV-1 System Patrol Craft is one of several types of system patrol craft that are in service with the Empire. Since our mighty warships cannot be everywhere, patrol craft are the first line of defence against any incursions by pirates, Rebels and hostile aliens. These ships rely on their powerful sublight engines, manoeuvrability and firepower to apprehend and if necessary, disable or destroy criminal ships. Since, they lack hyperdrives, system patrol craft spend most of their time flying specific routes in their assigned areas, observing known pirate and smuggling routes. Because of this, these craft are designed to engage in "pre-jump" combat in order to allow them to capture ships before they can flee into hyperspace. Often, crews of these craft serve long tours off-world, patrolling the borders of their star system. IPV-1s usually operate out of Imperial Navy bases, Imperial garrisons or large carriers, including Star Destroyers. "Constant vigilance" is the watchword of the patrol craft crew, as they must react quickly to intercept ships attempting to flee a system with smuggled or stolen goods. These commonly seen Imperial patrol vessels are the bane of smugglers and pirates from the Core to Wild Space. They are employed for patrol duties and are sometimes pressed into customs duty. Several variants of the IPV-1 exist in terms of what the craft is equipped with as well as its physical dimensions. The 150 metre variant (data entry's current picture) is more "tubby" and features two large antenna on its dorsal surface compared to the 120 metre variant, which is lean and lacks the dorsal features. In the case of the Modified IPV-1, it is equipped with starfighter scale weapons and as such it is intended to occupy smuggling craft until reinforcements can arrive. Also known by the name of system patroller, the two-engine IPV-1 is the standard Lant Mining Corporation security patrol ship. In its corporate capacity, the IPV-1 is employed for patrol duties, customs inspections and system protection. The IPV-1 has also found a large market supporting local system governments. Besides corporate users, defence forces, criminals, and even the Rebellion employ this craft. |
