The Turbolaser System I is a single heavy turbolaser featuring independent fire control and range gear. Normally encased in pure permacite and powered by a boron fission reactor, these weapons are organized into batteries, as the reactor can power multiple emplacements. These "hives" usually incorporate an underground network of barracks or at the minimum feature tunnels back to the main base or urban centre they are charged to defend. While this class of emplacement is considered a queen on the field of battle, it does suffer a significant weakness. Due to its clearly insufficient coolant restrictor circuits, this weapon has a tendency to overheat. Although these circuits permit sustained fire for up to 20 shots, in practice however, most batteries must initiate emergency shutdown after only five or six shots. In the heat of battle, inexperienced gunners often forget about their weapon's thermal monitors resulting in predicable and often unfortunate results. Depending on weather conditions, the turbolaser may be out of service indefinitely after experiencing an emergency shutdown. In the event of overheating, the best circumstance requires the gun to only undergo repairs. In the worse circumstance, the gun is damaged beyond repair and needs to be entirely replaced. |
