The MC90 Mon Calamari Cruiser is the first Mon Calamari Cruiser that has been conceived from bottom up for one sole purpose, war. Approximately six months after the tragedy at the Battle of Endor, the Mon Calamari started work on the MC90 line. In comparison to the MC80 line, these ships are a vast improvement. A heavier power generator system was required to handle the increased load brought on by the additional armaments, increased drive, manoeuvrability and shielding systems.

While each vessel maintains the Mon Calamari philosophy of being works of art, more of the components are modularized; internal components and systems are more consistently arranged, therefore making it easier for non-Mon Calamari techs. Any species can now crew these ships, as all of the controls and displays feature multiple wavelength settings. Problems of the MC80 such as: headaches caused by no two ships being alike and the flight controls duties being the sole domain of Mon Calamari crews has been resolved. Increased interior cargo space allows this design to carry two full wings (3 squadrons each) of New Republic fighters.

Finally seeing service six years after Endor, the first two vessels in this line, in order of introduction were the Defiance and the Galactic Voyager. This design is time-consuming and heinously expensive to construct. Due to this, the New Republic is unwilling to risk their MC90s in battles where victory is not guaranteed. Generally, these ships are kept nearby to the Core Worlds in order to protect the heart of the Galaxy, which they control.
