The Rebel Modified TIE Fighter was conceived after the glorious Battle of Hoth, after the Rebellion relocated their main base of operations to the planet of Arbra. Its purpose was to permit the infiltration of a Rebel attack force into Admiral Giel's secret armada to destroy a Teezl, the only known member of its species as it was being transported to Coruscant. The Teezl also known as a "Screamer" when linked to a hyperspace communications node, would enhance it by allowing for virtually instantaneous communications anywhere in the Empire. It was the Rebellion's correct reasoning, should this species reach Coruscant the Empire's improved ability to coordinate its forces would spell its long overdue doom. For reasons unknown the Rebellion chose to acquire four TIE Fighters (instead of tapping their pool of captured TIE Fighters) using Lando Calrissian's contact, Orion Ferret, a disreputable arms merchant. Ferret obtained the TIE Fighters via assembling purchasing components of damaged TIE Fighters from various battlefield salvagers. These fighters were hidden on the planet of Patch-4. After their retrieval, Captain Hanc Thorben led a team of tech specialists who instituted the radical alterations to the rebuilt TIE Fighters. To provide for the needs of the shields, hyperdrive and small nav computer, the regular power plant was refurbished and augmented. Originally, Captain Thorben intended to also include a miniature torpedo launcher module, however, this consideration was omitted in the end, since it would be quickly detected. In the cockpit, the original seats were replaced with ejection seats, and interfaces that were compatible with Rebel flight gear were installed. To test the Modified TIE Fighters' ability to fool Imperial personnel and to obtain the coordinates of Admiral Giel's armada, an isolated Imperial outpost, Spindrift Station was attacked. This phase of the operation, led by Luke Skywalker unfortunately proved to be overwhelmingly successful as it also netted Imperial prisoners. To allow the TIE Fighters to destroy the Teezl's life-sustaining containment cage located aft of the command module on Admiral Giel's flag ship, the Modified TIE Fighters had their laser cannons altered. However, due to the nature of the alterations the pilots would have to chose their shots carefully. To prevent friendly fire incidents each fighter was fitted with signal transceivers. With the coordinates in hand (a few parsecs from the Sullust System), the Rebels ambushed and captured the sole survivor of a TIE Fighter patrol in a star system near the route of the Giel's armada in order to obtain the recognition codes. With these codes, Skywalker and his deplorable band infiltrated the armada. To sow confusion amongst the fleet, its capital ships and TIE Fighters were attacked. During the hail of gun fire being traded by all ships within the fleet directed at anyone and everyone, Skywalker managed to murder the Teezl. These fighters were capable of taking laser hit damage (which badly chewed one of the wings) and still keep flying effectively. During the operation, two of the Rebel Modified TIE Fighters were lost, while the other two managed to escape thanks to their hyperdrives. Like other TIE Fighters, these Modified variants also handle inadequately in the atmosphere. *After Endor* It has been currently deemed that these remaining fighters have been employed by New Republic Intelligence for intermittent fact-finding missions into the Imperial Remnant. |
