The Republic Cruiser is the direct predecessor to the CR90 Corellian Corvette and although unarmed it maintains powerful deflector shields and is intended to transport ambassadors on missions throughout the Galaxy. The Republic Cruiser serves as evidence to the quality and fame of Corellian spacecraft design. One famous Republic Cruiser was the Radiant VII which was a veteran of 34 years of service in the diplomatic corps of Coruscant itself. The red colour of the Republic Cruiser indicated that the cruiser has diplomatic immunity or is protected by diplomatic status and warns others not to attack. The full red colour scheme of the ship signifies that it comes directly from Coruscant, the capital of the Galactic Republic. Red has been the colour of ambassadorial relations and neutrality for starships of the Galactic Republic for generations. This tradition would be continued into the days of the Galactic Empire, for example the Tantive IV was stripped in red which indicated its special diplomatic status.

These cruisers often served as a neutral meeting ground for Galactic Republic Officials and leaders of groups in conflict, the interchangeable Salon Pods were well armoured and insulated against any kind of eavesdropping. In this safe area, critical negotiations could take place and crises could be averted. The Salon Pods were often used for important meetings and negotiations. To accommodate the many kinds of alien physiology in the Galaxy, customized Salon Pods were available in the hangers on Coruscant and any of these could be fitted on the Cruiser. In emergency situations the entire Salon Pod could be ejected from the Cruiser with its own sensors and independent life-support gear ready to sustain the diplomatic party onboard. To accomplish this the Salon Pod seals its airlock doors, blows off its breakaway cowlings, deactivates the Salon Pod magnoclamps and engages its 4 rocket engines for escape thrust away from the doomed Cruiser. Due to of the versatility and the safety of the modular Salon Pod negotiations could be held onboard the Republic Cruiser.

This vessel sported a wide variety of dish and other communication antennas in order to communicate with any culture it may visit. The communications equipment allowed the Republic Cruiser to communicate with almost any type of vehicle or installation in thousands of Republic languages. Years later the Galactic Empire would standardize communications across the Galaxy making such a communications array unnecessary. The two communication officers onboard specialized in operating the communications computers, deciphering strange languages and decoding the complex signal pulses of unorthodox alien transmissions. The Republic Cruiser maintained tight security, as they were dedicated to the special objectives of galactic political service, unlike the civilian models of this ship which were for straightforward transport purposes. To accomplish their missions, these Cruisers must often rely of their reputation as absolutely secure ships for high-level diplomatic meetings and confrontations. For security reasons the crew is kept to a bare minimum, with many of the Cruiser's functions run by utility droids. For especially sensitive or dangerous missions, the crew could be limited to the Captain and pilot, with the rest of the posts being filled by droids.

The Republic Cruiser comes equipped with a salon lobby, formal dining room, lounges, state rooms and a droid hold. The navigational sensor dish and the automatic docking signal receiver were located on the external port side of the cockpit. In the nose of the vessel was the main forward sensors and behind that was the Salon Pod and its magnoclamps. The shield generator, shield energizer and shield projectors were located in the spine of the Cruiser, in front of the communications array. The Republic Cruiser maintained standard space docking rings on either side of the ship. The 2 escape pods were located on the bottom flanks on either side of the cruiser.
