The Storm Commando is the Emperor's answer to the Rebellion's successful exploitation of guerilla tactics. In his wisdom, the Emperor decided that this new type of Stormtrooper would also employ hit-and-fade tactics, and as such Storm Commandos are masters of guerilla warfare. Incredibly effective, these troops are among the most feared Stormtrooper units. Their reputation of ferocity is unmatched by most units, and in fact only a handful even approach their level. These troopers are one of the few units considered to be a priority threat by Rebel SpecForces. Currently, only a handful of these highly-trained units exist, however as their numbers grow, so too will their threat to the Rebellion. Approximately four months after the debacle at the Battle of Yavin, the Emperor in a classified executive order set in motion the creation of the Storm Commandos. Shortly after Yavin, just after the SSD Executor was commissioned, their existence was declassified and reported by the Imperial Defence Daily newsnet. For reasons not apparent, the existing training structure of the Stormtrooper Corps was unable to carry out the Emperor's command. Thus, Colonel Crix Madine, an Imperial Army special forces operator was selected by Grand Moff Tanniel to create the necessary machinery. In a matter of only a few months, units were formed and the machinery necessary to train Stormtroopers in commando tactics, skills and discipline was established, all thanks to Stormtrooper adaptability. Although Storm Commandos are culled from the ranks of Scout Troopers, it is known that other Stormtrooper types are also accepted. Even after the defection of Colonel Madine to the Rebellion (during the Dark Trooper Project) the training structure remained in place, creating even more Storm Commandos. Officially, however, the units' commander, Colonel Madine disappeared during a routine wilderness exercise in a series of caves somewhere in the Mid-Rim. He disappeared a few weeks after the Storm Commandos existence was first revealed to the public, and before he would lead his first mission. After Colonel Madine's departure, Colonel Jenn Smeel was placed in command. Before the official creation of these SpecForces, an elite Stormtrooper commando unit lead by Commander Glave was assigned to Governor Klime. This unnamed unit was but one test version that would later evolve into becoming Storm Commandos. Storm Commando units which range from four to forty men always maintain four components: line, assault, sabotage and tech. It is this very combination that allow these units to perform practically any small-scale mission anywhere in the Galaxy. Saboteurs are quite resourceful, even for Stormtroopers. Many mission successes were guaranteed due to a saboteur booby-trapping the target's escape vehicle. Techs are capable of repairing or jury-rigging a vast array of technology when required. Missions for these units include: infiltration and sabotage, extractions of captured Imperial personnel and Rebels, anti-Rebel operations, siege-breaking, pre-assault operations against invasion targets, Base Delta Zero operations against hard targets, and counter-boarding operations. In the case of counter-boarding, this entails being part of a trap against a targeted vessel. An example of this would be the Nebulon-B Frigate Far Orbit. In this capacity, tech teams can open doors or saboteurs can blow open blast doors in the process of capturing the targeted ship. Storm Commandos have been utilized on special terrains, including, but not limited to, radiation-contaminated locations, space and underwater. In these types of terrains, small-scale operations are generally in order, which means, commando raids. It is known that they have been based onboard select Imperial Star Destroyers (most likely as they were specially requested) for special use. An example of this would be ISB Central Commander Sollaine use of a Storm Commando squad from the ISD Devastator. Interestingly, a Storm Commando squad was brought to the planet of Stend VI to eliminate its pesky swoop gang problems. This elite unit, equipped with Modified Ikas-Adno XR-10 Shadowhawk Speeder Bikes is called the Dark Riders, and is led by Lieutenant Resk. Another elite unit (not posted to Stend VI) is the veteran NightWhispers. It is known that during the era of the emasculate New Republic, Storm Commandos were captured and prosecuted. And in at least one case, the "rehabilitation" of members of these fine units took the form of pressing them into being prison cooks. Holstered on the right side is their blaster carbine, while holstered on the left side is their blaster pistol. The left stomach pouch holds the survival kit, while the right pouch contains explosives. Their armour is based on the light armour donned by Imperial Scout Troopers. Storm Commando armour, which is an Imperial Military secret does not restrict the wearer's movement. Furthermore, the armour is devoid of any insignias or other unit designations, since these SpecForce troops favour operating in the dark. |
