The Armoured Attack Tank is a terrifying Trade Federation war machine designed for head-on combat in formal battle lines. The AAT is one of the Trade Federation's most formidable combat vehicles. The AAT's thick amour protects it from nearly all counterattacks, it is very heavily armoured in the forward section. In fact the nose of the Battle Tank is almost solid armour, as it is designed to break through heavy walls with impunity. The AAT presents itself in combat with a heavily armoured composure and blistering weapons fire.
The pilot operates the AAT as well as providing targeting data to the two gunners. The pilot uses a stereoscopic camera which relays data into a periscope scanner. If the visual sighting camera is damaged, the pilot can open up the forward hatch for direct visual sighting. The Tank Commander sits in the turret section, complete with control command receiver antennas and battlefield sensors. The turret hatch opens in two pieces, flanking the Tank Commander on both sides. To control the rotation of the turret, the Tank Commander uses the turret rotation pedals located at its feet. The pilot and gunners enter the AAT via the aft main hatchway.
When firing its different shells through its launchers, the shells are cocooned in high-energy plasma which dramatically improves the shells' penetration power and speed, and also reduces the friction acting on the shells. The shell launchers can be equipped with a variety of shells, as the AAT can be prepared for specialized missions. The Bunker-Busting Shell Launcher Tubes are closest to the nose, then comes the Armour-Piercing Shell Launcher Tubes and then the outer most tubes, the General Purpose High Energy Shell Launcher Tubes. The General Purpose High Energy Shells are used for anti-personnel or anti-vehicle usage. The AAT's crew cannot reload the shell launchers, they can only be reloaded when the Battle Tank returns to the Trade Federation Landing Ship or Battleship, where mechanical facilities take the entire inside of the "foot" of the AAT off from below. Once done a loaded replacement is then installed in its place.
The Four-Chambered Multi-Reactor
Power Plant, key power generators and communications equipment are kept
at the rear of the AAT for protection. The heavy-duty repulsor disc and
coils keep the Battle Tank just off the ground and propel it forward. The
small slit located between the twin anti-personnel lasers serves as an
air cooling intake. The diagonally placed power converters on either side
of the AAT in aft section run to very hot temperatures. When the AATs was
deployed on Naboo, it was their first use in open combat, however the tanks
had seen considerable training action, thus leaving them scarred and weathered.
