The Trade Federation MTT was originally designed with an open-staging chamber instead of the battle droid deployment rack. The company who built the MTT is known for their original designs, combined with the fact that the carried troops would be droids, their engineers designed the deployment rack. The employment of the deployment rack allowed the MTT to double the number of Trade Federation Battle Droids that could be originally carried. The Battle Droids themselves are stored in the racks in compressed form to ensure maximum capacity of the MTT. Meanwhile, the original MTT design was still retained for use of transporting Droidekas. The same Baktoid workshop that developed the ATT also designed the large and heavy MTT.
To deploy its troops, the MTT opens up its circular main troop deployment hatch and the lower troop deployment hatch. From there the troop deployment rack is extended on a powerful hydraulic rail and the Trade Federation Battle Droids are released. At the conclusion of a battle, Battle Droids are simply reloaded into the rack and safely transported back to their base. Designed with heavy forward armour for deployment in traditional battle lines, this combat vehicle is not only designed to transport Battle Droids, but to support them on the battlefield as well. The MTT's reinforced and studded case-hardened metal alloy studs were designed to allow this vehicle to punch through walls so that Battle Droids could be directly deployed into enemy or "future customer (as the Trade Federation often preferred to say)" buildings.
Vital equipment such as the reactor, main engines and deployment rack extender drive and engine were located in the rear of the vehicle, thus enjoying the protection offered by the armour in the front. The MTT when deployed follows pre-programmed routes, however the Battle Droid Pilots can alter these routes once they receive the proper commands from the Droid Control Ship. Located on top of the MTT is the control room. Located inside is the control signal receiver and two Battle Droid Pilots which control the massive MTT. At the rear of the control room is the circular escape hatch.
The distinctive Baktoid
style gives this craft the appearance reminiscent of heavy, jungle-dwelling
animals. The exhaust from the repulsorlift generator and cooling system
is vented straight down toward the ground through several large vents under
the MTT. Thus it causes a storm of wind around the vehicle, which gives
the MTT an appearance of being powerful and menacing. Located on the upper
flanks in the rear section of the MTT is the rack drive heat exhaust vents.
Deployment of MTTs onto the target planets is achieved with the use of
C-9979 Landing Ships. The MTT's deployment on Naboo was its first use in
a major military action, and many MTTs had only been used for training
exercises on remote planets beforehand.
