The T-65B X-Wing is without a doubt the signature fighter of the Rebel Alliance. The X-Wing was a top secret project of the Incom Corporation when the Empire began to suspect Rebel sympathies within the company and seized its assets. Key members of the design team escaped with the plans and two prototypes, destroying all other records of the fighter. The X-Wing was in its final design stages when the Imperial Security Bureau began to suspect that the members of the Incom design staff might have sympathies for the Rebel Alliance. A Rebel commando team assisted in the Incom's senior design staff's defection to the Rebels. Fortunately for the Empire, the X-Wing's complex systems and rare alloys have delayed production of significant numbers of this fighter for years.
The X-Wing is a well balanced fighter. Its highly responsive manoeuvrability can make it a dangerous fighter for new pilots. The X-Wing achieves its remarkable manoeuvrability through a combination of three factors. First, the differential thrust from its four fusial ion engines. Second, high-mass electromagnetic gyros in each of the four retro thrusters adding a turning effect that helps to swing the fighter in tight curves. And finally, precise bursts of retro-thrust fire forward through the turbine nozzles to add further control and give the fighter a critical edge in combat. In non combat situations, and especially when flying through an atmosphere where an aerodynamic lifting surface is required, the wing foils are locked together. The astromech droid monitors systems, does all onboard maintenance, both routine and emergency and life-support systems, as well as augmenting the fighter's computer capabilities. It even flies the fighter when circumstances permit. It also assist with astrogation and holds pre-set hyperspace jump co-ordinates. And on top of that it handles in-flight operational adjustments and damage control.
The Primary Sensor Array
and the Enemy Sensor Jamming Unit are found in the nose of the X-Wing.
Behind that is the Sensor Computer, then the Communications Antenna and
then the powerful Flight Control Computer. Behind that is the cockpit.
Pilots controls the pitch and roll of the X-Wing through the use of control
pedals found at the feet of the pilot. In addition to the fairly straightforward
flight control systems, comprehensive cockpit displays allow the pilot
to monitor and control energy distribution throughout the fighter's systems
during combat. The X-Wing's laser generators operate at the safety limits
to generate maximum destructive power. The long cannons of the X-wing develop
longer range for its lasers, which can engage an on coming enemy before
the enemy can return fire.
