The BTL-S3 Y-Wing is used in diplomatic escort missions by the Rebels and are also used at countless Rebel bases. This is same with the BTL-4A Y-Wing. Y-Wings predate the TIE/ln and the X-Wing by several years. These fighters can take a lot of punishment but they lack manoeuvrability and speed which gives Imperial Fighters the advantage. As an added bonus the rugged construction of the BTL-S3 allows it to take a considerable amount of damage before its systems fail. It is not uncommon for the Rebels to strip down a Y-Wing for assault runs on our convoys and be refitted days later for a heavy bomb runs on our bases. If pilots are not careful in combat against a Y-Wing, they can be devastating in close quarters combat. The BTL-S3 is rarely seen in use by the Rebel Alliance anymore by Imperial Forces and it is suspected that the Rebels have begun to favour the BTL-A4 Y-Wing.

Like the X-Wing, the astromech droid fits into a droid socket behind the cockpit and monitors all flight, navigation and power systems. The droid can also handle fire control, perform in-flight maintenance and reroute power as needed. The Gunner replaces the augmented targeting computer equipment featured in the BTL-A4 Y-Wing. The Y-Wing has three main component. The forward armoured cockpit module, the reinforced central spar, which houses the power generator, shield generator and the hyperdrive unit and not to mention the astromech droid. And finally the last main component, which is the cross-wing which houses the power cells and attaches the engines to the body of the Y-Wing. Behind the dome coverings on the engines are the sensor arrays of this fighter.
