The Z-95 Headhunter AF4 is an aging military-grade starfighter that is inexpensive, simple and can be found throughout the galaxy with many modifications to its design. AF4s can be found in service with the Rebellion, corporate forces, pirates, planetary police forces, planetary/system defence forces and, outlaw groups. Remote Rebel bases have employed Z-95s for defensive purposes to supplement their complement of Y-Wings. The Rebels also employed Z-95s to avoid arousing Imperial suspicions when operating in certain areas of space. It must be noted however, that some AF4s were never equipped with hyperdrives. Z-95 Headhunters are one of the most common starfighters in the galaxy. Such a large number of Z-95s were manufactured over several decades that Imperial statisticians estimate that Z-95s outnumber any other starfighter currently in service in the Known Galaxy, save the TIE Fighter. Shortly before the onset of the Clone Wars the AF4 was introduced. Lack of market enthusiasm about the design in combination with the dissolution of the Incom and Subpro development partnership ensured that the AF4 was the last Z-95 in the venerable series. Nonetheless, the AF4 was evenly matched against other starfighters of its era. It was reported that Incom acquired the proprietary systems and intellectual property rights of the fighter prior to ending its relationship with Subpro. Starship mechanics have no problems in modifying the Headhunter, as its technology is well understood. The most common modifications involved replacing the weapons or enhancing the motors for greater speed. This starfighter featured a bubble cockpit which gave the pilot a clear field of vision. Located in the Z-95-AF4's nose was the sensor array, and behind that was the combat targeting computers. Protection for the main power generator was achieved by the cowling located directly aft of the cockpit. On the back of the Z-95-AF4's wings are its manoeuvring jets, which made this starfighter surprising manoeuvrable in atmospheric combat. The Headhunter's legendary durability can only be explained by its structural toughness, easy availability, and low maintenance needs. In the end the Z-95-AF4s are a good choice for defensive missions and can be employed as assault craft. |
